Rohit Sharma has faced intense criticism for his recent struggles with the bat while his leadership has also been heavily questioned following India home test series defeat to New Zealand.

India captain Rohit Sharma is reportedly unlikely to be part of the team plans for the test format after the ongoing Border Gavaskar trophy against Australia. Rohit has faced intense criticism for his recent struggles with the bat and his leadership has also been heavily questioned following India home Test series defeat to New Zealand. According to a report in The Times of India Rohit may not continue as test cricketer after the Australia series though his retirement from the format might not be immediate.

While this uncertainty regarding Rohit future could create instability for the team the report also explored the potential return of star batter Virat Kohli as captain. Kohli stepped down from the role after leading India to remarkable success with a win rate of 58.8% in 68 matches winning 40 and losing just 17. He was also the first Indian captain to lead the team to a Test series victory in Australia securing a 2-1 win in the 2018/19 series. His possible return as captain could be influenced by the selectors lack of faith in the younger generation of players for the leadership role.

Rohit uncertain future might signal the end of his test career with reports suggesting that he may not feature in the series deciding test against Australia which begins in Sydney on Friday. India head coach Gautam Gambhir did not completely rule out the possibility of Rohit being left out of the playing XI. He mentioned that the final decision would be made after assessing the pitch conditions on match day.

Everything is fine with Rohit and I don’t think it’s anything traditional. The head coach is here and that should be good enough. We will look at the wicket and finalize the team tomorrow Gambhir said in a press conference.

When asked again if Rohit would be part of the team Gambhir simply replied the answer remains the same.
