The Congress leader’s comments about jalebis in Haryana sparked mockery from BJP leaders, who claimed he had no idea how the sweet treat was made.
New Delhi: Jalebis for Rahul Gandhi. Jalebis for the Congress.
In celebration of a historic third consecutive Assembly win, the BJP’s Haryana unit marked their victory by sending a kilogram of jalebis to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi at his Delhi office. This gesture was not one of goodwill or courtesy toward a defeated opponent.
Rather, it was a playful jab at his earlier remarks about jalebis from Gohana in Haryana.
On behalf of all the workers of the Bhartiya Janta Party in Haryana, jalebis have been sent to Rahul Gandhi’s residence, the party announced on X. A screenshot from a food delivery app was attached, showing an order from a Delhi-based sweets and chaat shop to Mr. Gandhi.
The delivery address listed was 24, Akbar Road in Delhi, the Congress headquarters.
Why jalebis?
While campaigning, Rahul Gandhi spoke about jalebis from Gohana, highlighting how they were mass-produced, sold across the country, and even exported, creating jobs and generating revenue. He argued that jalebi sellers had been negatively impacted by the Centre’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) system.
His comments drew sharp responses from BJP leaders, who claimed he was clueless about how the sweet is actually made. Former Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad remarked, I also like Gohana jalebi… but one has to understand how they are made and sold, further accusing Gandhi of not doing his research properly.
Interestingly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also referenced jalebis in a campaign speech earlier in the year. He used the treat to mock the opposition’s alleged plan to rotate the Prime Minister’s post annually if the INDIA bloc came to power, asking Is the Prime Minister’s post like Matu Ram’s jalebi?
The famous Gohana jalebis were first made in 1958 by a local businessman named Matu Ram. Today, his grandsons continue the legacy. According to Raman Gupta, one of the grandsons, the jalebi is made from pure desi ghee, is crispy yet soft, and each one weighs around 250 grams. A box of four, weighing one kilogram, costs Rs.320/-.
